Community Spot Light: The Kahuku Sugar Mill
From Sugar Cane to Shrimp Plates: A Taste of the Islands
Kahuku Sugar Mill is a historic former sugar plantation site on Oahu’s North Shore in the town of Kahuku. It processed local sugarcane and employed thousands of immigrant workers from across Asia and Europe, including Gia’s great great Uncle Percy, who worked as a machinist at the in the late 1800’s.
The mill ceased operations in 1971, and the grounds have been repurposed as a casual hub of food trucks, small shops, and scattered mill relics that recall the area’s plantation past.
It is more than just a stop—it’s an experience that brings together Hawaii’s past and present. The diversity of flavours, combined with the site’s historical significance, makes it a must-visit spot on any North Shore itinerary.
